Investigation of thermoacoustic oscillations in gas turbine combustors

Introduction and Motivation

A primary need to target the stricter environmental regulations and thereby reduction of pollutants formation in gas turbines is to have reliable predictive tools. These tools should help combustion relevant investigations and ultimately improve the design procedure. For instance, using the premixed combustion is considered to be an appropriate option as a primary prevention method towards nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission reduction. However, the premixed system are associated with combustion induced oscillation, vibration, flashback and flame blow off. These phenomena are harmful for the system and consequently lead to the operation deficiency and ultimately degrade the system life cycle.

Method and Theory

The Combustion noise group consists of four institutes from four universities (TU Darmstadt, RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin and Karlsruhe Institute of technology) which are focusing on a common goal:” investigation of combustion noise generation and propagation in premixed and partially premixed regimes”. The numerical tools are incompressible combustion LES (Large Eddy Simulation/CAA (Computational Aero Acoustics) hybrid approach, fully compressible Large Eddy Simulation and Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS).

Proceeding

In the present project a premixed turbulent Bunsen type flame, is numerically investigated by ATF (Artificially Thickened Flame) combustion model. The ATF approach is based on modification of thermal diffusivity and pre-exponential constants which leads to a thickened flame front and make it resolvable on LES mesh grid. The Bunsen type flame is experimentally investigated in TU Berlin. The burner is designed to study the impact of different preheating temperature and different momentum on the formation of combustion induced noise. Based on this CFD results the CAA (RWTH Aachen) will be carried on and compared to measurement (TU Berlin) and results from fully compressible LES and Direct Numerical simulation (KIT).
